Aberdeen Airport Parking - Airport History
Aberdeen airport was opened in 1934, by the politician and business Eric Gandar Dower. The airport was intended to link the northern Scotland with London and the rest of the UK.
Like most airports in the UK Aberdeen was requisitioned by the RAF for use as bast, primarily for reconnaissance but also for the protection of occupied Norway against German bombing raids. In 1943 a crew of German defectors flew to Scotland, landing at Aberdeen. This is seen as a tremendous success for the Allies as the plane was carrying the FuG 202 Liechtenstein radar.
Aberdeen airport was nationalised in 1947, following the end of the Second World War. Then in 1975 management of the airport was taken over by the BAA. For a time there were regular transatlantic flights (to Toronto) but they were deemed too expensive and cancelled in 1970.
Since the discovery of North Sea Oil the airport has grown into the primary heliport hub connecting the oil-rigs with the mainland. Aberdeen is now the largest commercial heliport in the world with 3 helicopter terminals.
